Throughout the month and culminating on May 30, communities across the Pacific Northwest are coming together in community to confront corporate rule and celebrate and cross-border solidarity.
For decades, corporations have used trade policy to amass profits and power off the backs of working people and the planet. Free trade has made it easier for large employers to “offshore” jobs to the Global South where they benefit from poor workplace protection laws, lax pollution controls and outrageously low wages. These same corporations then turn around and pit working people against one another to deflect responsibility. The truth is that working people everywhere suffer under trade deals that favor investment portfolios and large corporations over working people and the environment.
Right this moment, the governments of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada are negotiating yet another corporate trade deal. In response, people are coming together across borders and across issue areas to say “Enough!” Together, we’re showing that our communities are united, and that we won’t accept trade rules that leave working people behind.
